Mark Gershinson takes gold at tricky Calcot Park

A warm, calm Calcot Park in Reading welcomed 95 UKSGA members to our 11th meeting of the season. Calcot's defence was clear to see with tricky greens complexes and undulating greens which made good ball placement vital for good scoring. Stories of three putts and "de-greening" rebounded around the bar!

Round one saw Gordon Stewart (Berkhamstead) shoot a solid level par 70  with Messrs  Bramall, Hollingdale, Wilson and White all just one shot back on 71. But it was Mark Gershinson (Hartsbourne) who stormed ahead with a fantastic 5 under par 65 which included 7 birdies. His lead into round 2 was to be 5 shots. But Messrs White and Wilson had already enjoyed three wins between them this season and were sure to try to chase down the leader in round two. Would George's local knowledge as a member of Calcot Park be enough to see him close the gap?

Round two enjoyed the same warm weather and the very same tricky pins. And with Phil Bramall and Derek Hollingdale falling away it seemed only Mike White and George Wilson could catch the leader and with 71 and 72 respectively the chase was on. George's 72 included an eagle 2 at the par 4 10th. But Mark held firm and, despite dropping 3 shots in his final 4 holes, posted  a second round 73 to maintain a 4 shot lead and take another gold medal - his second of the season.

Mike White (West Wilts)  took silver with his 2 over total of 142 pipping George Wilson (Calcot Park) on countback.

Super Seniors winner this time was Keith Morris (Camberley Heath) with a 149 total. Keith had led after round 1 and held on by 2 shots from Nigel Evans (St Mellons).

Masters winner was the consistent John Yuill (Newmarket) with 157 (including an eagle 2 at the par 4 10th) to pip Michael Latham (Hankley) by one shot.

Best net score was, of course, Mark Gershinson, so the chrystal prize went to second placed Mark Oliver (Bath) for his net 1 over par 141.

Our thanks must go to Calcot for giving up their course for two days and for some excellent hospitality in the clubhouse.  Our tour now moves north to Wilmslow for round 12 and there are still places available at this excellent venue.
