John Carey wins Gold Medal at superb Stoneham

For those who had never played Stoneham they were in for a pleasant surprise as the course, despite some drizzle on day one, was beautifully presented and scoring was excellent.

Round one saw three players hit level par - John Carey (Woburn), Gerry Penfold (Sandford Springs) and Les Bruckner (Hindhead) with 7 guys within 2 shots just behind. Gerry's three 2's had thrust him to the top but John Carey's 4 birdies in a row from the 13th stood out.

Round two started in dryer conditions - lots of cloud cover after some early sun and a very light breeze. But a few showers brought out the brollies and waterproofs from time to time.

Our Gold Medal winner at Stoneham was rookie John Carey(Woburn) with 72 and 73 for a 145, 1 over par, total to win by two clear shots. key to his success was a very steady back 9 of 1 birdie and 8 straight pars. His first win since joining the Association.

In Silver Medal position this time was Mark Trasler (Knole Park). The Kent man posted 73 and 74 for a 147 total.

And picking up Bronze was Mr consistency himself - Mike Ready (The Melbourne Club) with a 150 total after a second round 76.

Victory in the Super Senior (Over 65) section belonged to Les Bruckner (Hindhead) who followed his level par first round with a second round 78 to hang on by 1 shot pipping Gerry Penfold (Sandford Springs)  into second spot.

Masters Champion (Over 70's) at Stoneham was Hugh Purvis (Long Ashton) with a 77 and 80 for a total of 157 to, again, win it by one shot from Chris Graham (Ogbourne Downs)

Overall net best score was an amazing -9 over the two rounds but as he figured in the main event the christal for best net went to second place Graham Lucas (Broadstone) pipping co-organiser Adrian Dawson (Woodcote Park) on countback. Enjoy the new handicap Mark!

As expected our trip to the south coast was a popular one and the excellent turnout brought home some very good scoring. The course was very well presented and well set up to challenge everyone and the staff looked after us fabulously.
