Gershinson Grabs Gold at Thorndon Park

The 19th green and clubhouse

Fluffy clouds,  a light breeze and a some dry and bouncy conditions greeted the UKSGA at Thorndon Park in Essex under the backdrop of Thorndon Hall.

Scoring on round one was proving tough for most early on with some tricky pins but David Lang (Hanbury Manor) (72) posted an excellent score to lead the way overnight with 73's from Mark Gershinson (Hartsbourne), John Carey (Woburn) and Nigel Lawton (Studley Wood). With 8 players within 6 shots of the lead it looked like a close race for the Gold Medal.

It was new pin positions for day 2 and the greens roller brought the stimp reading to 10.5. The weather was consistent with round one but some tighter pins contributed to some tougher scoring and a resultant PCC of plus 1.

With overnight leader David Lang falling away it was Mark Gershinson who held on to take the win with a second round 76 for a 149 total to win by two clear shots. Seen here collecting his medal from Thorndon Park General Manager  Iain Evans.

Round 2 top scorer was David Pain who's 73 included a back 9 of 2 under. But it was David McMillan (Hayling Island) who moved through the field with a second round 75 for a 151 total to lift the silver medal.

The bronze medal went to one of the Thorndon members - Ian Waller with his 152 total.

With Ian picking up the bronze the Super Seniors chrystal went to Steve Webb (158) with Hugh Purvis (Long Ashton) winning the Masters event on 159.

Our net winner shot two fabulous rounds of net 67 & 70 to win by 6 shots and Mark Stellig (Chelmsford) was there to collect his chrystal.

And as we leave Essex for our next meeting at Bromborough we must thank Iain Evans and his team at Thorndon for looking after us and to the Board and members for giving up their lovely course for two days. The course was well presented and a fair test with plentiful good feedback from those that took part.
