Little Ashton proved to be a very popular event this week attracting the largest field for a UKSGA event to date. Its position as a top 100 club and Open qualifying course combined with a central and accessible position in the country proved irresistible for 133 members. It is worth noting however, that despite the popularity, all reserves eventually gained entry.
Craig Pates is to be congratulated for taking first prize from a field of 133. His impressive final round of 72 resulting in a final score of 149, was especially good because a battery malfunction locked his clubs in his car boot for longer than was comfortable, resulting in a mad dash to make his 2nd day tee time! Fortunately for Craig, he made it with 10 minutes to spare. Silver and bronze medals were awarded to Ian Richardson (151) and Simon Dymoke (152) respectively. Seniors prize went to David Price (153), Supers Seniors to John Yuill (157) and the Masters to Neil Hughes (155) with Jim Chambers taking the handicap prize with his net 143. Further congratulations are due to Michael Kfouri whose splendid first round gross 77 beat his age. Very well done to them all!
At 6,700 yards, the Little Ashton white tees are a challenge but as Michael Kfouri’s first round gross 77 proves it is not all about strike distance but more about position and precision in one’s short game. This parkland, tree-lined course with demanding greens proved to be a worthy test for the players. Conditions were kind for Day 1 but damp conditions, whilst not deterring most 2nd round competitors, did result in a CSS of 74.
All competitors were clearly impressed by the course and clubhouse provisions so it is good to report that feedback from Little Ashton about our association was equally positive. In addition, the club expressed a hope that the UKSGA return to them in the future; no doubt a wish that will be granted very happily!
