From George Smith : 13th December.
Many thanks to the members who have contacted me and answered my questions.
I have therefore entered the event.
As yet, no offers of a partner for the pairs event, but hopefully someone will offer closer to the date.

FYI

This now looks like the proposal from SA which looks pretty good to me. The game against the Western Cape can be organised on the weekend before the Championship but I’ll need to get Jonathan Hobday to come back with something. It will be a lot easier when we have final numbers.

I would prefer them to change the number in a team to suit our numbers as I really don’t want anyone to be left out unless they specifically ask to be.

I’ve just had the attached reply from Tim Hewan which I think works for us. Any comments would be welcome.

Neil,

That’s terrific news.

Traditionally The “Challenge” match between our “50 to 55’s” and our “over 55’s” takes place on the TUESDAY preceding the SA Strokeplay – so we are talking about Tuesday 18 October.

We would play foursomes on RONDEBOSCH, and singles at ROYAL CAPE in the afternoon, followed by a dinner that evening at Royal Cape.

We play on Carts in the morning as 36 holes in one day – especially with the tournament following – is a bit much to ask.

Traditionally we have 8 man sides – but if you are definitely 10, we can increase. Or maybe you pick the best 8 out of your touring party to play the match, and the others are travelling reserves? For your info, our guys (all 16 or 20 of us) are likely to be three handicap or below – maybe one or two four but that is it. I hope your team can take that!.

We would play the game as a triangular match in threeballs.

We hope to have entry forms out in a month or so.

By the way, as SA Senior Golf has now integrated with the SA Golf Association, our website is now on www.saga.co.za – and look for the “seniors” tab.

Keep in touch

Regards

Tim

 Mike

I now have several (7 or 8) people who are going to come down to SA to play in their Championships and to play a match against the SAs. So the trip is now on.

Could I ask you to email all UKSGA members confirming that the trip is on and inviting them to contact me for details of dates, itinerary etc please? I’m hopeful that we can get the team numbers up to say a dozen as that will make everything much better. I’m very keen to make sure that all members are aware that this is on, that they can have a guaranteed place in both the match and the Championship and have plenty of time to sort out their travel and accommodation needs. It isn’t something to do at the last minute!

The homepage item for this trip could also do with updating to confirm that the trip is now on and we are looking for additional participants.

 Thanks for your help.

Subject: 50-55 golfers

I am a regular visitor to the UKSGA website and was interested in your Membership feature on your home page.

As I approach the age of 50, I was wondering if the UKSGA had considered allowing golfers aged 50-55 to become members and play in events.  I realise that traditionally the age for becoming a “Senior” in the UK is age 55.  However, the Scottish Seniors Golf Society (SSGS) recognised considerable talent between the ages of 50 and 55 who were unable to find regular, meaningful competition and allowed these golfers to enter SSGS events.

I would appreciate your thoughts on allowing the 50-55 age group to play in UKSGA events along similar lines to SSGS events and look forward to your reply.

Regards

David Robertson

Thank you for your interest.

By copy of this response I am raising the matter with our Committee.

As you will appreciate our events are a two day 36 hole qualifying tournament and our typical turnout in the South East, South West and Wales is near maximum at around 60.  In the Midlands and the North the turnout is usually less and it would be possible to ‘fill up’ with ‘over 50’s’.

In practice it may be necessary to delay acceptance of players under 55 until the closing date, which might create problems of accommodation etc.  It would certainly depend on response.

Hello Mike,

Ref my photo on the website, I can only say that I am sorry that my scores did not match my form!

Scores notwithstanding, my first UKSGA event was very enjoyable - great organisation at a friendly club - and I look forward to the next one.

Kind regards,

Roger
